Good News in February!

February brought me good news: TAKEN AWAY, the play Don Butler and I co-created, was the cover story and featured article in my university’s quarterly publication, Current.

The three actors featured on the cover (out of the four who performed in the play) are alums of our university, and all four actors truly brought their characters to life. The magazine’s cover announces: “Holocaust-themed play written by two PBA professors reaches 6,000 schoolchildren”; quite an accomplishment, if I do say so myself! The actor who plays Elfie, the main protagonist, reflects in the article: “‘When I first read the script, I was in tears. And I thought, How could I not tell this story?’” Moreover, a middle school teacher assessed the play thusly: “‘That was such a powerful performance that now my heart really hurts. The play was the most meaningful and straightforward experience our students have ever had about the Holocaust.’”

Creating this play with Don was a great joy, even though our subject matter is emotionally challenging. Our next children’s play will celebrate my dog Mitzvah, for her brave and optimistic attitude towards life despite her blindness, and her rascally cat friend, Daisy.
